Your Visual Art as an Asset

with Joy Berus, Esq.

This workshop will provide visual artists with a broad range of information on the business of being an artist. We will cover the major issues and tips relating to consignment agreements, private commission agreements, purchases, sales, loans, and leases. We will also discuss how to deal with clients and galleries who are business entities such as LLCs and corporations, what these entities are, and if you should be one.  Finally, you will learn how to protect and defend your rights under the California Resale Royalty Act.

Joy Berus is an attorney and partner in the law firm of Barth Berus & Calderon, LLP. Her practice focuses on art law, which comprises business law, tax law, personal property law, and appraisal law related to the asset class of art, antiques, historical objects, collections, and historical real estate. Her clients include collectors, investors, celebrities such as sports figures and actors, dealers, museums, and artists. She assists in planning and carrying out transactions such as acquisitions, sales, consignments, loans, valuations, copyright matters, license agreements, conservation easements, charitable donations, tangible property charitable trust provisions, and tangible property estate planning. She is a prominent lecturer, author, and contributor in such forums as CBS Marketwatch, Investor's Business Daily, the Wall Street Journal, and the CCH Journal of Practical Estate Planning. She is admitted to all four federal United States District Courts in California, and is also a licensed real estate broker. She is a member of ArtTable, the American Society of Appraisers, and the lawyer referral service panel of California Lawyers for the Arts.

These workshops were made possible, in part, by support provided by the California Arts Council, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the California Community Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
