Music Supervisor Agreements
with Melissa Dagodag, Esq.

Music supervisors typically select and incorporate music into visual
media (e.g., film, TV, and online media), acting as a liaison between creative and business people on a project. Music supervisors may work within independent production companies, film studios, networks, music supervision companies, or do freelance work; we will comment on forming agreements in each of these scenarios. (We will NOT discuss music supervisors for live events or musical theatre.) We'll discuss the main points included in a Music Supervisor Agreement, including services, delivery, screen credit, copyright ownership, compensation, and potential royalty percentages in soundtrack albums. We'll also cover the basics of licenses required for use of music in film and TV, i.e., master use and synchronization licenses. Finally, we'll discuss the boilerplate desirable in most California contracts.

Melissa Dagodag is a native of California and completed her B.A. and M.A. at Stanford University. After earning her J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 2000, Melissa worked as an attorney at Manatt, Phelps, and Phillips, LLP, then in-house as Vice President of a small music publishing company (Palan Music, later purchased by MCS), and as Business Affairs Counsel at fashion company BCBG. Melissa is a member of the California State Bar Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association, Stanford Professional Women of Los Angeles, and Stanford Ideas and Connections Network. She serves on the Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels West and volunteers at California Lawyers for the Arts.

These workshops are made possible, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the California Community Foundation. Additional support provided by the California Arts Council.
