Reality TV Productions and the Law
with Elsa Ramo, Esq.

This workshop provides an overview of legal and transactional issues you should be aware of whether you are on-camera talent, or producing or creating reality content. Producing, exploiting, and appearing in an unscripted format present their own legal pitfalls and issues; this workshop will provide a practical and informative overview of:

1) Copyright ownership of reality show content and how that ownership is structured among partners and collaborators;
2) Basic agreements and terms of understanding for unscripted pitches and/or development agreements;
3) Overview of reality show production and the required clearances and transactional agreements required for those participating on and behind the camera;
4) How to protect yourself in pitching, producing and appearing in unscripted content;
5) Basic overview of network and showrunner agreements once a project is picked up as a pilot and/or series.

Elsa Ramo is an entertainment attorney, representing many production companies as well as individual financiers and producers. The focus of her practice is to be a legal resource to film financiers, producers, and other creative individuals in the film, music and television industries. Her law firm has provided production legal services (including production, film finance, and distribution) to over 40 television, feature film, short film, and documentary productions each year. Some of which include: THE EXPATRIATE (Aaron Eckhart); CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER (Andy Samberg, Rashida Jones, Elijah Wood, and Emma Roberts), LIKE CRAZY (Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence), recipient of 2011’s Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival, and GIMME SHELTER (Vanessa Hudgens, Brendan Fraser, and Rosario Dawson).

These workshops are made possible, in part, from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission; The City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs; and the California Community Foundation.  Additional support provided by the California Arts Council.
