Contract and Copyright Basics for Artists

With Corey Carter, Esq.

California Lawyers for the Arts presents a workshop for artists to gain a broad overview of contract basics and intellectual property rights. Presenter Corey Carter will cover information about common contract clauses--focusing on ways to avoid pitfalls and common mistakes. This workshop will walk you through the most important clauses necessary to any contract, how to achieve a "meeting of the minds," and how to protect yourself from contract litigation.

We will also give a brief overview of copyright issues including joint-authored work, work-made-for-hire, derivative works, copyright infringement, fair use, public domain, and registration of copyright.

Presenter:

Corey Carter is an attorney whose practice focuses on business formation, business transactions, contracts, intellectual property (copyright and trademark), and consumer bankruptcy law. Mr. Carter is admitted to practice in all courts of the State of California, the United States District Court for the Central District of California, and the United States Tax Court. He is a member of the Central District of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys Association (CDCBAA), California Lawyers for the Arts, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association

Directions:

Enter the Angels Gate property from S. Gaffey St and 32nd Street. Follow the main path (Barlow Saxton Rd into Osgood Farley Rd.) until it forks into Nco Rd. Follow that road to the Cultural Center Complex Building A. Parking is open and free. Maps below.

These workshops are made possible, in part, from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission; The City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs; and the California Community Foundation.  Additional support provided by the California Arts Council.
