Employment and Fundraising Laws for Non-Profits

With Anthony Garafola , Esq. & Ken Larsen

4:00 - 5:00 p.m.: Attorney Anthony Garafola will clarify the differences between contractor and employee status for teaching artists and help demystify contracts.

Anthony Garafola is a Sacramento based business attorney and artist who regularly provides advice and counsel to a wide range of businesses, both large and small. Mr. Garafola is a member of the California Lawyers for the Arts' Advisory Board, is a panel attorney for California Lawyers for the Arts' Lawyer Referral Service, and frequently advises creative artists in his private practice.

5:00 - 6:00 p.m.: Nonprofit expert Ken Larsen will present "Fundraising Within the Law". Topics to be covered include the Nonprofit Integrity Act, California's path-breaking attempt to minimize abuses around all types of nonprofit fundraising as well as provisions of the law that apply to specific fundraising activities like raffles, bingo, casino nights, wine donations, and fireworks sales. Plus what you need to know about the Fair Political Practices Act if you fundraise for a ballot measure campaign.

Ken Larsen has been instrumental in shaping California's nonprofit fundraising legislation and regulation for almost 20 years. Currently, he serves as Senior Policy Advisor for California Volunteers, Office of the Governor. Previously, he was Director of Public Policy for the California Association of Nonprofits and Associate Director of California Confederation of the Arts, the predecessor organization to California Arts Advocates. As an arts worker, he helped build Christo's Running Fence and booked the first California tour of North America's only professional horse-drawn theater company, among others.
