Film Financing Basics
with Pierce Law Group LLP

Program Description
Join CLA and Pierce Law Group LLP attorneys David Albert Pierce and Azita Mirzaian for an overview of how film financing works. From development funds to completion loans and everything in between, learn how a film project receives financing and the legal framework that drives the process. Topics to be covered include a bird’s-eye view of traditional models of financing, securities laws, crowdfunding, tax credits, the role of completion bonds and sales agents, and recent trends that are changing the financing landscape.

Presenters
David Albert Pierce, Esq. David’s practice encompasses all areas of entertainment law, including production counsel matters, film finance, guild matters, and intellectual property issues. He is a frequent lecturer on the legal issues confronting the entertainment industry; he has taught a UCLA Extension course on “Organizing, Financing, and Running A Start-Up Entertainment Production Company” for the past twelve years, and is an annual speaker at the Slamdance Film Festival and at the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences. David is a regular columnist for MovieMaker Magazine and serves as Vice President of Business Affairs for the magazine. He proudly served as production counsel on the critically acclaimed, Academy Award winning film “The Artist,” and has provided legal services on “The Hunger Games,” “Mad Men,” and “Weeds.” He also represents film lender and borrowers, and regularly drafts private placement offerings for productions.

Azita Mirzaian, Esq. Azita’s practice includes entertainment litigation in the areas of copyright, trademark, right of publicity, contract disputes, defamation, and labor and employment law issues in the film and television industry. She also works in the areas of film clearance matters and child actor contract ratifications. Azita is the Vice Chair of the Beverly Hills Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section; is on the Executive Committee of the Beverly Hills Bar Association’s Entertainment Section; and is a founding member of California Society of Entertainment Lawyers.
