Part One, of a 4-Part Series, titled "Music Industry Legal & Business Workshops."

With Kia Kamran, Esq., Meghan Gohil, and "Hookman" Marlin Bonds

You’re a record producer, and a record label wants you to record one of their artists; the label has given you the agreement, and you need to know what you can negotiate and what the terms mean. This workshop will examine a Producer’s Agreement clause by clause. You’ll learn what each clause means for the producer, artist, and label, how to negotiate the clauses, and about standard concepts, terms, and deals. We'll also cover the concept of recoupment from the producer’s perspective.

Kia Kamran, Esq., is a California based attorney. He currently focuses his practice on transactional matters in the music business, video game, and internet and new media, as well as in trademarks, copyrights, corporate matters, business transactions, film, and television. His clients include bands, artists, independent record labels, record producers, music publishers, song pluggers, music composers, music supervisors, personal managers, talent agents, makeup artists, models, dancers, touring companies, concert producers, independent radio promotion companies, promotion and branding companies, marketing companies, entertainment and media entrepreneurs, entertainment executives, Internet companies, telecommunications companies, clothing and apparel companies, surfboard designers, television productions companies, photographers, graphic artists, and a slew of other persons and entities. His all time favorite artists are Bob Marley and The Clash. He is also quite fond of the music of Tool, the work of the mighty artist and genius producer Dr. Dre, and the band Alice in Chains.

Meghan Gohil is an independent producer based in Los Angeles, California.  He owns Hollywood Recording Studio and distributes his work through IODA (Independent Online Recording Alliance). Recent major credits include recording the last three albums for Cure co-founder Lol Tolhurst’s band, Levinhurst.  He has also worked on exclusive on-location recordings for AT&T's Blue Room at Vegoose in Las Vegas, where he’s engineered recordings for Trey Anastasio of Phish, Jack Johnson with Animal Liberation Orchestra, Phil Lesh & Joan Osbourne, Digable Planets, and Michael Frante. Gohil’s productions have appeared on soundtracks produced for VH-1, LifeTime, and MTV networks.  His tracks have also appeared on internationally distributed compilations and in the independent film "Omaha The Movie," the first film by Dan Mervish, who went on to found the Slamdance Film Festival.

"Hookman" Marlin Bonds finds himself squarely on the musical map, with his biggest hit so far being the 2007/2008 smash "Money In the Bank" which he produced and co-wrote for super producer Swizz Beatz. The song peaked at #22 on Billboard Charts and was later featured in the Step Up 2 movie. He continues to build his career with production/co-writes for Flo Rida, Twista (single), Bow Wow (single), Tyrese, Lil Kim, E! Network, Q-Tip, and Akon's girl group Krave (single). Please check out his new artist Heven who is tearing up the internet with her break out single "Gay Best Friend" (GBF).
