Mickey Mouse has enjoyed over ninety years of copyright protection.  In five short years, that protection will end, and Mickey Mouse will enter the public domain.  What does this mean for one of America's most beloved icons?

Join California-licensed attorneys from Start Art Legal, Matthew Dedon and Jacob Janzen, as they illustrate the copyright history of Disney's flagship character, and how Mickey and copyright law have affected each other over the years.

This workshop will explore:

  • The creation of Mickey Mouse, and how failures and intellectual property laws ultimately affected his creation;
  • A brief primer on copyright law, touching on key points from it's earliest inception in the United States to its present form;
  • The legal battle to extend copyright protection; and
  • What will ultimately happen to Mickey's status when his copyright protection ends.
