California Lawyers for the Arts Presents

Equitable Contract Considerations for Contractors and Artists

What makes an agreement or contract equitable? How can an artist protect their intellectual property when entering a contract with an employer or organization?

Join California Lawyers for the Arts and our guests Sam Mazzeo and Olivia Phillips of a BETTER Professional Corporation for a workshop and conversation on equity and contracting practices. Some of the topics which will be explored in this workshop are the differing perspectives on Intellectual Property between employer and artists, Ab5 classification, the differences between a license and ownership or assignment. We'll also provide some tips for artists and independent contractors for self advocacy and some best practices for employers to consider to ensure equity within their approach to contracting.

About Our Speakers:

Sam Mazzeo

Sam is a Renaissance man, but like, an approachable one. Here are some things he can help you better understand: trademark, business formation & securities, contracts, Halloween party planning, how to do a standing backflip, and the proper pronunciation of the word “GIF.” But he can’t help you if your questions are related to birds. He isn't a big fan of birds.

Publications & Interviews:

Olivia Phillips
Liv is a Jane of all trades, working on mastering them all. Here are some things she can help you better understand: labor & employment, contracts, copyright, the secret to a great guacamole, why SPF is important, and how to approach dogs you’ve never met before. There’s an etiquette to that last one, and as a dog mom, she feels very strongly about it.

She's also an independently certified HR professional (SHRM-CP).
