Defamation and Rights of Privacy and Publicity for Artists

With Steven T. Lowe, Esq.

The interaction between art and reality has become more pronounced in recent years. Authors, screenwriters, and visual artists are often times confronted with the issue of what they can say and what they can’t say about celebrities, political figures, and non-public figures. And when and under what circumstances they can use images of these people. This workshop will educate the participants on the law regarding these issues and provide guidelines to avoid exposure to liability.

Steven T. Lowe received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Connecticut in 1984, after completing his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University. With almost 30 years experience, Mr. Lowe has authored several articles on copyright law and the entertainment industry, and has served as a panelist and keynote speaker at events by the Beverly Hills Bar Association, California Lawyers for the Arts, Art LA, Pepperdine University, and many more.

These workshops are made possible, in part, from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission; The City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs; and the California Community Foundation.  Additional support provided by the California Arts Council.
