California Lawyers for the Arts is proud to present the seventh annual bi-national symposium, INTERSECTIONS: Art and Law at the Border. With a focus on the geo-political context of the Tijuana-San Diego region, the intention of this gathering is to highlight artists, activists, lawyers, scholars, and researchers whose work navigates the intersection of art, praxis and legal issues.

This year, we turn our focus to the evolving legal landscape at the San Diego-Tijuana border region. As we explore the intersection of art and law, we delve into the unique geopolitical context that defines this dynamic border region. Through legal workshops, and thought-provoking discussions, we examine how contemporary issues shape both the creative and legal sectors, and how the region’s distinctive position influences innovation and collaboration across borders. We invite the community on both sides of the border to attend. Live English to Spanish interpretation will be provided!

Join us at INTERSECTIONS 2025 at The Front Gallery in San Ysidro.

Workshop 1: Art Law Fundamentals – Protecting Your Creative Work

With Sam Mazzeo and Olivia Casselini of a Better Professional Corporation

This year’s Symposium will feature an introductory legal workshop by Sam Mazzeo and Olivia Casellini who will guide attendees through the fundamentals of art law. The session will break down key legal concepts, including equitable contracts, copyright, and infringement, while also offering practical tips for self-advocacy as an artist.

Understanding the legal side of your creative practice is essential—it can help you avoid potential legal issues, ensure fair compensation, and foster healthier, more transparent collaborations. This workshop will also guide you in identifying red flags in contracts and taking the right steps if your work is used without permission. Although this workshop will cover US based law we encourage artists from Tijuana who work in the US to attend.

Panel: Beyond the Wall: Art and Activism in the Borderlands

Featuring Meli Barragan and Daniel Rovanova

This panel invites a conversation among artists whose work responds to the shifting realities of the U.S.-Mexico border. As policies, landscapes, and communities evolve, so too does the role of art in making sense of these changes. Through dialogue, the panelists will explore how creative practices serve as both witness and intervention—examining borders not only as physical divides, but as spaces of cultural exchange, resistance, and resilience. Together, they’ll reflect on how their work engages an ever-changing borderland.

Workshop 2: Know Your Rights – Legal Realities in the U.S.–Mexico Border

Presented by: Ginger Jacobs, Jacobs & Schlesinger LLP

This workshop offers essential legal guidance for individuals and communities living and working along the U.S.–Mexico border. Led by an experienced immigration attorney, the session will explore how shifting immigration policies, border enforcement strategies, and civil liberties protections impact daily life in the borderlands.

Participants will gain practical tools for understanding their rights when interacting with immigration officials, border patrol, or local law enforcement. The workshop will also address recent legal developments, offer resources for responding to rights violations, and create space for questions and community dialogue.

Whether you're an artist, activist, educator, or resident of the border region, this session will help you stay informed and empowered in a complex and rapidly evolving legal environment.
